Quick Tips When Developing Your Virtual Portfolio

Here is a quick summary of how to create and manage your virtual portfolio.
The design of your blog should be something that communicates your personality in addition to communicating a sense of professionalism. The colors have to be pleasing to the eye and enhance the visibility of all your words. Be sure viewers can easily read your blog and the colors aren’t distracting to the intent of your message. The titles of the blog should express your personality and be easily remembered by the viewer. You want to catch perspective employer with something that illustrates creativity on your part.
Don’t try to over reach with the technical stuff. Blogger offers a lot of gadgets but remember this is about getting your message across to the viewer simply too. Brainstorm the transferable skills that you would like to illustrate. How can you sell yourself to an employer? It's important that you have good examples of what you do and who you are on your blog to back up your transferable skills. Illustrate these skills in both academic endeavors and outside hobbies, volunteer work, part time employment, etc... Be sure to include your resume and cover letter. You should use Google Docs to post large pieces of information. Give us a brief introduction in each blog and then, hyperlink whenever you can. Do not overwhelm the viewer. Create an easily scan able portfolio for the eye, similar to an easily scan able cover letter. Remember, when using Docs, you must upload your work, save it and then publish it. To do this, click on "Share" and then choose "publish/embed." Once the page comes up that shows your published document's link, you can take that link and put it in the "Edit Html" of your post so that it is immediately viewable on your blog (This is best for PowerPoint’s), or take the link and hyperlink it in your post using the hyperlink button on the "Compose" of your post. To make sure that this works, log out of your Google account and go on your blog as a visitor. Then click on the hyperlink and see if your document comes up. For those of you who may want to upload a video, use YouTube and then put the link in the "Edit Html" of your post.
Don't be afraid to be creative and remember to adapt to your audience's needs and frame of reference. Try creating a video handshake by using a web cam and uploading and embedding into your blog using youtube. Or, try hyperlinking to web sites that put a picture into a viewer's mind, for example a place of employment or a volunteer experience. The idea of the portfolio is to expand on your resume and highlight information about you that might appear one dimensional or limited on a resume.
Go to our blog and view some of my past students work for ideas on designing and writing. You shouldn’t hesitate to reach out to me if you need help. We can arrange to work together online or meet to discuss your needs or just brainstorm

Persuasive Speeches

Well, the persuasive issues speeches are underway! Please post your critiques here. Be sure that all critiques are detailed and make comment to how well the presenters applied their argument to Monroe's Motivated Sequence, in addition to including the supporting sources needed to provide the necessary reasoning and evidence. Remember, arguments need logic and evidence every step of the way to be peruasive. Holes in the argument ( lack of evidence) need to be addressed in this critique.

Chris Daggett, Candidate for Governor Visits Rider University

Engaging An Audience
The race for a Governor in New Jersey is on! It is a perfect time to observe the communication skills that we have addressed over the summer session. We are the only university that will host all three candidates currently running for Governor of New Jersey. This Tuesday, Sept 15, the first candidate to visit the Rider University campus will be Mr. Chris Daggett. The goal of this blog is to observe and apply the effectiveness of his communication. What ways does Mr. Daggett engage his audience successfully? Please comment in the ways that Mr. Chris Daggett engages his audience in his presentation. Did Mr. Daggett give his audience a reason to listen? What ways did he engage the audience in the introduction? Here are just a few things to think about as listening to his presentation. Did he meet the objectives of an introduction? If so, to what effect? Did he tell his audience what the presentation was about? How did he gear the information to a college audience? How did he adapt to the listener’s experiences, knowledge and interests? Did he bring audience involvement by personalizing and connecting to the audience? How did he help his listeners through his presentations? Did you hear previews, internal summaries and transitions? How did he create a presentation that was geared for the ear and not the eye? What kinds of verbal devices and language were utilized? Did he design an effective conclusion? Summarize your thoughts to this presentation. Gear your comments to specific, detailed examples and application to engaging your audience for effective communication. What are your overall thoughts about his platform? Comments are due by Friday, September 18th at the start of class.

President Obama trip to New Jersey

Listening in a public speaking situation is important. Listening can teach us how to become better speakers and become knowledgeable in important issues among other things. Please comment in this post after you have returned from your outing at the PNC Arts Center to hear President Obama and Governor Corzine speak. I want to know what techniques did you hear being used by either of these speakers ( or, if another is present) that illustrated a message being adapted specifically to a college audience? What was the message? How was it achieved? Topic? Supporting Details? Delivery? Or something else? Be specific. You need to tie your comments directly information evidenced in the speech. Really listening teaches us many things...and can really open up new perspectives....What did you listen to?
